On October 5, 2026, the student chapter organized a trip to the DESY (Deutsches Elektronen-Synchrotron), which is located in the west of Hamburg.
The guided tour started with a presentation about general information about the DESY and gave an overview of the timeline and the size of the whole project. We learned that the DESY consists of many different parts and fields, among which are the fields of high-energy particle physics and of photon physics. After the presentation, we were guided through the DESY campus and saw different stations of photon experiments, which branch off from the main accelerator ring PETRA. Then, we were allowed to see now-inoperative particle collider HERA, which is around 30 meters below ground and has a circumference of 6.3 kilometers.
The tour was well-structured and interesting for all participants, and can therefore be wholeheartedly recommended for any visitor interested in particle or photon physics.
