About us
Since you found this website you might already have a vague idea what a student chapter is. If not, also no problem. Here, we want to give you a short introduction to who we are and what we do.
Who Are We?
We are a group of students of University of Hamburg, Hamburg University of Technology and other Institutions joint under the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics (SIAM) and the International Association of Applied Mathematics and Mechanics (GAMM) in order to further the application of mathematics to industry and science, promote research efforts in mathematics and provide media for the exchange of information and ideas between mathematicians and other technical and scientific personnel.
What Do We Do?
We provide our members with opportunities to develop a wide range of communication, leadership and teamwork skills while ensuring exchange of experience, awareness of the current topics and information on careers and job opportunities. A strong interaction between researchers working in the different fields of Mathematical Modeling, as well as communication between Bachelor's, Master's, Ph.D. students, postdocs, and faculty members is of great importance for us. That is why we encourage and promote it by:
- organizing regular student seminars (as well as colloquiums with guest speakers),
- hosting social activities in order to foster interdisciplinary cooperation and networking,
- representing applied mathematics, with emphasis on Mathematical Modeling and Numerical Solvers, through different media, and
- maintaining the Alumni Network.
You can read more about our activities and formal statutes in our rules of procedure:
Rules of procedure for the SIAM Chapter
