SIAM Conference on Computational Science and Engineering 2023
26 February 2023
The SIAM Conference on Computational Science and Engineering 2023 took place from February 26th to March 3rd in Amsterdam. Since the ICIAM is taking place in Tokyo this year, there is no stand-alone SIAM Annual Meeting and thus Amsterdam was the place, where student chapters from all over the world were destined to meet.
However, the representation of the Hamburg Student chapter in the CSE23 conference even started at the Hackathon previous to the conference. The participation in the Hackathon was very successful for our chapter, since one of our members, Ikrom Akramov, was part of the winning team and was awarded with a $1,000 prize.
During the conference, most of our chapter members participated in the poster session on Tuesday or had talks in minisymposia. Here, they obtained contributions from other early-career researchers as well as renowned professors from international institutions. In between the sessions, there were opportunities to talk to people from diverse backgrounds while enjoying some coffee. The affiliate group program offered further optimal possibilities to enhance your personal network.
Besides the scientific part, we also had the chance of attending non-scientifically focused talks, like the lecture on Cultivating a Culture of Inclusion, where we were could learn about the advantages of diversity within working groups. Particularly worth mentioning is the public lecture, which connected state-of-the art research to illustrative real-world examples in a TED-style format with excellent speakers.
Overall, the conference was a great experience for all our members with new contacts and ideas. Those who stayed also a bit longer for the weekend, then even had the chance do some sightseeing in the beautiful city of Amsterdam.
