GAMM Student Chapter Science Slam 2024
12 July 2024
The second year in a row, the GAMM student Chapter Science Slam took place on July 12th 2024. A total of 42 young researchers from the GAMM student chapter groups of Bochum, Braunschweig, Hamburg and Hannover participated in this single day event which took place at Leibniz University Hannover. These young researchers got the opportunity to present their work in a casual setting, preparing them for more formal events.
Following a joint lunch, the keynote speakers Dr. Benedikt Wegener and Dr. Alexey Fofonov from d‑fine GmbH gave valuable insides into their company and possible career choices of postdocs outside of academia as well as their personal reasons for leaving academia. They highlighted, that not only working in a research related field but also consultants have interesting and challenging questions to face on an every day basis.
After a short break, which was used by the participants to connect to each other, we had three sessions with a total of nine speakers from all of the participating GAMM Student Chapter groups. The topics ranged from single atoms in Bose-Einstein condensates up to what whole planes and the sound they produce. And included the fields of applied mathematics, biomechanics, machine learning, material modeling and topology optimization. True to the principle of Science Slam the talks included jokes and connected the research topic to often unexpected topics from everyday life. To further connect with each other, the day closed off with a conference dinner in a local restaurant.
We would like to thank the GAMM for the financial support, making this event possible. Furthermore, we would like to thank Dr. Benedikt Wegener and Dr. Alexey Fofonov from d-fine GmbH, all speakers and chairs as well as the organizers from the local GAMM Student Chapter for their contribution to the event.

Initial Announcement:
Maybe you remember a special event from
last year
: The Science Slam in Hannover!
And even if you don't know about it, yet, there are exiting news for you: We are repeating it in 2024.
So, first of all, a small reminder what this is about. The student chapters from Braunschweig, Bochum, Hannover and Hamburg organize a joint event to gather young researchers for a more informal exchange. So this is not an ordinary workshop. The idea is for you to open up discussions by giving entertaining talks about your research or a topic of your liking. Further, there will be a keynote talk from industry and a lot of time for chatting during breaks.
We will organise a joint travel from Hamburg to Hannover and back.
The current plan is to leave by train at approximately 9am and return by 10pm.
We will provide you with more precise information after the registration.
As a new addition, we will also host an online pre-event that will give an introduction to science slams, this year. So, if you are not yet familiar with science slams or just want to meet people, feel free to join us on May 22nd at 5pm. A link to the online meeting will be provided to all of you shortly before.
