That's because we decided to changed things up a bit,
skip the crowded December and rather start together into an exiting new year.
<br><br>
Thus, we would like to meet you on Tuesday, January 30th at 5pm in room 1528 at the Geomatikum for a New Year's Reception.
Besides a short personal introduction of us as new officers, we want to discuss some events for the upcoming year with you.
Further, we invite you to bring some of your favorite board games, so we can play them together afterwards.
Of course, we will also provide some games as well as snacks and drinks.

<p>
On the afternoon of August 8th, we gathered for a joint summer outing.
Well, at least that was the plan, but the beloved Hamburg summer weather had different plans...
</p>
<p>
Making the best out of the situation, the plan was quickly adapted to a game night with (virtual) campfire and (analog) games.
Having gotten hungry from discussions around "Werewolf" and "Ensemble", the evening ended with shared pizzas.
We enjoyed the numerous attendance despite the change of plans,
especially since this was the last official event organised by the board of the academic year 22/23.
</p>
<p>
In the name of the whole board:<br>
Thank you very much for attending our events and bringing live into the student chapter!

<p>
From July 24th to 26th the German SIAM chapters meet under the aegis of the workshop
German SIAM Student Chapters Meet Algorithmic Optimization
in Trier (also known as Trèves).
</p>
<p>
The trip started on Sunday with a lengthy, but picturesque, train ride all the way to Rhineland-Palatinate along the rivers Rhine and Mosel.
The workshop itself started on Monday morning with an icebreaker game to get to know the other participants,
as well as short presentations of the attending chapters.
Then, the scientific program started with the first of four invited plenary talks.
During the rest of the day, the junior researchers had the chance to give half-hour-long talks, including our chapter representative Henrik.
In between, the coffee breaks and a joint lunch in the Mensa offered further great possibilities to get in touch with other people.
The day ended with a combined welcome reception and poster session.
Being provided with local wine, there was again plenty of room for scientific exchange.
Walking back from the university on the hill to the hotel, one could get a nice view over the city of Trier.
</p>
<p></p>
<p>
The second day was again filled with scientific program.
In particular, there were again two plenary talks leading up to presentations by junior researchers.
However, that day ended a bit earlier (just like the rain) to do a guided city tour.
This covered some of the main sights, such as the Porta Nigra, the Cathedral, and a statue of Karl Marx at his birthplace.
After that, we went to the "Wirtshaus zur Glocke" for the conference dinner and a wine tasting in an old wine cellar.
The latter covered six delicious wines from the Mosel-Saar region, ranging from dry riesling to sweet ice wine.
</p>
<p></p>
<p>
On Wednesday, we started the day a bit differently with an open discussion on best practices for SIAM chapters.
Here, we gained insights from the work of other chapters and exchanged thoughts on upcoming events.
After two more scientific talks, the last session was again a moderated discussion on the broad topic "PhD and Beyond".
We covered aspects of academic and industrial careers, networking, publications, and more.
These were, in particular, supplemented with valuable insights from the attending professors.
The workshop ended with a final joint lunch in the mensa, and everybody returned in their own direction.
</p>
<p>
Finally, we would like to thank the SIAM Chapter Trier for their extraordinary organization
and the opportunity to be a part of the program committee
as well as their research training group ALOP for funding the workshop.

The first GAMM Student Chapter Science Slam took place in Hannover on 30th June 2023.
The aim of the event was to promote the exchange and interconnection between the GAMM Student Chapter groups of Bochum, Hamburg and Hannover
and give especially young academics an opportunity to present their research in a more casual scope.
For that purpose, a single day event was held at the Leibniz University Hannover.
</p>
<p>
After a joint lunch and the opening, the program started with a keynote talk from industry.
Dr.-Ing. Fabian Welschinger (Senior Expert) and Kevin Heiner (Human Resources) presented their employer, the Robert Bosch GmbH.
The talk included a Q&A session, Fabian Welschinger highlighting important decisions in his career at the company and
Kevin Heiner discussing the importance of different career management skills in a videogame-inspired style.
</p>
<p></p>
<p>
Following the keynote talk, ten speakers from the different Student Chapter groups presented topics in the fields of material modeling, speed-up of simulations, applied mathematics and biomechanics.
Albeit the varying scientific background of the audience, all speakers successfully managed to give an insight into their research.
To stay true to the idea of a Science Slam, some talks included, jokes, memes, and even a rhyme.
In the afternoon, the social program of the event began with a visit to Herrenhausen Gardens.
Following this, we had joint dinner in a local restaurant, before the groups returned home.
</p>
<p>
We would like to thank the GAMM for the financial support of the Student Chapters, making this event possible. Furthermore, we would like to thank Dr. Fabian Welschinger and Kevin Heiner from Robert Bosch GmbH, all the speakers and the local organizers for their valuable contributions to the event.

Initial Announcement:<br>
Together with the GAMM student chapters from Hannover and Bochum, we are organising a pretty special event: a joint Science Slam in Hannover!
The idea behind the event is to gather young researchers (PhD/ MSc) working in the areas of maths and mechanics for a more informal exchange of research ideas and experiences.
So this is not an ordinary conference!
Especially if you haven't presented something at a big conference yet,
e.g. because you are at the beginning of your PhD or writing your master thesis,
this is the perfect event for you: In a 10-15min talk you can illustrate the question you are working on:
Why is it interesting? What is your idea how it could be solved? What kind of applications does it have?
And all that without the potential pressure of a big conference and for work in progress with open questions.
</p>
<p>
We will organise a joint travel from Hamburg to Hannover and back.<br>
The current plan is to leave by train at approximately 9am and return by 10pm.
</p>
<p>
For more information check our
website for the event.
</p>
<p>
If you have any questions, don't hesitate to contact us. We are looking forward to many registrations and an exciting and fun day in Hannover!

</p>
<p>
On June 19th Josef Schmalfuss gave a presentation on "Alternative Data in Fundamental Investing" and his company Oxford DP at the TUHH.
</p>
<p>
The talk started with insights on alternative data, where to find it and how to use it.
This was involved with a lot of interaction with the audience and brainstorming together.
It is always nice to see, where mathematics can have an influence in the real world, here especially in a new sense in finance.
Then we got insights into a real investors presentation about benefits of the product offered by Oxford DP.
From viewing the actual web interface of the software, we were able to discuss economic effects reflected by the data.
For example it became clearly visible, how the market for British food delivery is differently distributed when considering urban or rural areas.
Finally, questions about career perspective outside the academic system and transitioning from a PhD were answered.
</p>
<p>
In a nutshell, it was a very nice event for everybody interested in application of mathematics and data science.
We were especially delighted to welcome many master students in the audience.

On May 22nd, we had an interesting presentation by Michel Bänsch on the process of finishing the PhD around drinks and cookies in Geomatikum.
After giving some advice to organize the writing of a monograph and some explanation of the process of publishing the thesis, he came back on his experience of the end of the PhD.
He added to that some data that he found in the Zeit Campus magazine: RATGEBER PROMOTION Der Weg zum Doktortitel : Von der Themenfindung bis zur Verteidigung.

In a virtual event, insurance company ERGO gave a presentation about the insurance industry and risk management, and what the typical challenges for mathematicians in quantitative risk management are.
Consecutively, career options at ERGO for students during and after their degree were presented.
The event ended with a Q&A session about working for an insurance company.

On April 12th, we had a very nice presentation by Lina Fesefeldt and Dennis Schmeckpeper on the tools that they use to organise their work around drinks and cookies in TUHH.
After a presentation by Dennis on the notion of Zettelkasten, Lina presented what kind of tools she uses to implement it on her computer and Dennis explained how he handles the interaction between computer and handwritten notes with this tool.
In particular, a well organised Zettelkasten system permits to visualize your material as a tree. This asks two main technical abilities : using Markdown files and setting up foam on GitHub.

<p>
The SIAM Conference on Computational Science and Engineering 2023 took place from February 26th to March 3rd in Amsterdam.
Since the ICIAM is taking place in Tokyo this year, there is no stand-alone SIAM Annual Meeting and thus Amsterdam was the place, where student chapters from all over the world were destined to meet.
</p>
<p>
However, the representation of the Hamburg Student chapter in the CSE23 conference even started at the Hackathon previous to the conference.
The participation in the Hackathon was very successful for our chapter, since one of our members, Ikrom Akramov, was part of the winning team and was awarded with a $1,000 prize.
</p>
<p>
During the conference, most of our chapter members participated in the poster session on Tuesday or had talks in minisymposia.
Here, they obtained contributions from other early-career researchers as well as renowned professors from international institutions.
In between the sessions, there were opportunities to talk to people from diverse backgrounds while enjoying some coffee.
The affiliate group program offered further optimal possibilities to enhance your personal network.
</p>
<p>
Besides the scientific part, we also had the chance of attending non-scientifically focused talks, like the lecture on Cultivating a Culture of Inclusion, where we were could learn about the advantages of diversity within working groups.
Particularly worth mentioning is the public lecture, which connected state-of-the art research to illustrative real-world examples in a TED-style format with excellent speakers.
</p>
<p>
Overall, the conference was a great experience for all our members with new contacts and ideas.
Those who stayed also a bit longer for the weekend, then even had the chance do some sightseeing in the beautiful city of Amsterdam.

On Wednesday afternoon, our series "Life in PhD" continued with Katharina Klioba sharing insights on going abroad during your PhD. General questions such as where to go, when to go or how to fund your stay were addressed. With a mixture of hard facts on scholarships of the DAAD (German Academic Exchange Program) and anecdotes from Katharina's personal experience at TU Delft in the Netherlands, both the on-site attendees at TUHH and the online participants got to know about what going abroad during your PhD could entail. And who knows, maybe someone got motivated to try it by themselves?
</p>
<p></p>
<p>
Initial Announcement:<br>
As announced previously, we alternate the location for our life in PhD event.
The first event at TUHH on the topic Going abroad during your PhD - Why, where and how? will take place on February 8th at 16:00 in room H0.06 and will be hosted by Katharina Klioba.
She will do a brief presentation of a funding program for PhDs from the DAAD and share her own experience from a 6-month stay at TU Delft. A discussion about going abroad will follow.
